What actually replaces a Purdue alumni email address

Getting another inbox is easy and free. That is not the problem. The alumni address was doing three separate jobs, and only one of them is replaceable by signing up for something else.

Job one: somewhere to receive mail

Trivially replaceable. Gmail, Outlook, Proton, Fastmail, iCloud — any of them. If all you used the address for was reading mail, you can stop here, spend twenty minutes updating the accounts that point at it, and lose nothing.

Job two: a stable address that outlives your employer

Harder, and it is why alumni addresses existed. A work address dies when you change jobs; a Purdue address was supposed not to. The durable replacement is an address on a domain you own — roughly fifteen dollars a year at a registrar, pointed at a mailbox or forwarded free through a service like Cloudflare Email Routing. It is the only option nobody can switch off but you.

Job three: proof you are affiliated with a university

This one has no replacement, and it is the one nobody warns you about. Some services do not merely accept an institutional address, they require one and reject personal domains outright.

• Google Scholar verifies a profile using an institutional address and will not accept Gmail or Yahoo. For alumni no longer at a university, the Purdue address may be the only thing keeping a scholarly profile verified — and there may be nothing to move it to.
• Institution-sponsored subscriptions such as UpToDate re-verify periodically against an institutional address. Losing the address can mean losing the subscription, not just the login.
• Academic and student discounts, conference rates and some software licensing check the domain rather than the person.

If you are in this position, that is worth putting on the record, because it is precisely the cost Purdue has not accounted for publicly.

What Purdue is offering

Nothing that preserves the address. No replacement mailbox, no paid option, no forwarding grace period. Alumni are asked to update a preferred address and move on. Most of Purdue’s Big Ten peers facing the same technical problem did something else — the table is here.

Before you switch anything

Do the accounts you cannot fix afterwards first. A domain registrar whose original email was never verified, or a loyalty account you can no longer log into, needs the old mailbox or a photo ID to recover — so those have a genuine deadline rather than a nominal one.
